"People with serious mental illness are not ill in isolation. Their
families, extended whanau and significant others, whatever they may think about
the illness, cannot escape being affected by it. The lives of people with
serious mental illness are inextricably involved with the lives of of those
they love and care for, and the lives of those who love and care about them." -
Mental Health Commission, 1998.
We support families and whanau to provide the best possible quality of life
and recovery to their loved one who has a mental illness including
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and phobias, depression, personality
disorders and borderline personality disorder.
We do this by:
-
Free support, education and information for family and whanau.
-
Developing Peer Support Networks for
families affected by serious and enduring mental illness.
-
Providing opportunities for mutual support, the sharing of experiences and
gaining strength & skills to cope better through participation in support groups.
-
Promoting the rights and needs of individuals and families affected by
mental illness.
-
-
Offering advocacy & advice to people about services, and to services
about family issues for policy, planning, resourcing & provision.
-
Access to our extensive library for SF members.
