SF Auckland Committee
The role of the committee is primarily one of governance - to ensure that
day-to-day operations remain true to the vision, purpose and philosophy of the
organisation. Specifically, the role includes formulation of policy, planning,
monitoring and evaluation of organisational activities and performance,
ensuring that legal and ethical obligations of the organisation are met, and
ensuring that the necessary resources are available to maintain a quality
service of maximum benefit to users. This role is performed on behalf of the
members of SF Auckland, who vote the committee in at the AGM. We have had a
busy year this year as we worked closely with the staff to draft and finalise a
strategic plan and business plan.
The committee consists of:
-
A chairperson - whose role is to ensure the smooth running of meetings, and
to be the spokesperson for the committee.
-
A treasurer - who overlooks the finances.
-
Committee members - who are expected to attend meetings, get involved in
discussions and offer alternative points of view, and if their time allows,
participate in sub-committees and to get involved in Branch projects.
We meet once a month at Fellowship House, generally on the evening of the
third Monday of each month. Although currently we function on a volunteer
basis, cost of attendance, for example towards petrol costs, can be reimbursed.
It all sounds quite serious but we do have fun, and also the satisfaction of
giving something back to our community. In addition skills learnt through being
part of the committee can be used in other areas of our lives, both
professional and personal. Everyone who has lived with a family member
suffering from a major mental illness has something to offer the
committee.
The amount of input a member gives is up to them, but generally a few hours
a month would be required. We are always on the lookout for new members, so if
you feel that you would like to know more, please contact SF Auckland
CULTURAL ADVISORS:
Manu Foto - Vaka Tautua (09) 526 2541
Position: Pacific Island Cultural Advisor
Vaka Tautua in Partnership with SF Auckland
Dawn of a new beginning
Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Taloha ni, Bula Vinaka,
Fakalofa lahi atu, kia orana, Kia ora and a warm Pacific greetings.
Malologa Trust has gone through a huge change in the last
eight months. The organisation has developed a joint venture with Pacific
Information, Advocacy, Support Services (PIASS) Trust in forming a shared
management company called "Vaka Tautua". The name for the new entity is a
Samoan proverb which means.. "leadership through servant hood" and the logo is
a Vaka (boat) undertaking a journey. This notion is very much appropriate as
Malologa Trust is embarking in a new journey. Malologa will become the delivery
arm for Vaka Tautua in providing Mental health Services.
It is the vision of this new development to provide a menu
of services for Pacific people in; Youth, disabilities sector, Mental health
sector, Older people and in Research and development. Through this vehicle,
Pacific people can hopefully access services that they are entitling to, and
our partnerships with SF will be strengthening through the referral process.
Our Pacific families will access the support that SF staff will provide.
Vaka Tautua will be providing services on a regional
basis, and I am pleased to announce that recently Vaka Tautua received a
contract from Waitemata DHB. This contract is to provide Community Support
Services to Pacific people suffering from mental illness within Waitakere. This
development will provide opportunity to work more closely with SF field workers
by possibly co-locating in the West.
It is an exciting time for Malologa Trust and I will
continue to inform our readers of further progress with this new venture or
adventure.

Kitty Ko - Yan Oi Sei
Position: Asian Cultural Advisor
Hi everyone/Kia Ora/Talofa/Malo e lelei/ Nei Ho!
My name is Kitty Ko and I am the Asian Cultural Adviser for SF Auckland. I
was born in Hong Kong and I came to New Zealand in 1993. I have studied
psychology at the University of Auckland and I have been working in the mental
health field since Nov. 2001.
At the moment, I am working full-time at the mental health specialist
service in a District Health Board. Besides working full-time and continue
studying part-time, I am also one of the volunteers of Yan Oi Sei.
Yan Oi Sei is a registered charitable trust for Chinese families and
friends with experience of mental health issues in New Zealand. Yan Oi Sei was
established in 2003 because we saw there is a need for a mental health support
service for the Chinese families in New Zealand. And so, as the Asian cultural
advisor for SF Auckland, I would expect to provide cultural advice to SF
Auckland Asian fieldworkers and to its mangement.
I hope that by working closely with SF Auckland, Yan Oi Sei and SF Auckland
can both provide culturally appropriate services to the Asian population in New
Zealand.

AFFINITY SERVICES & SF AUCKLAND
On the 8th Feb. 2008, SF Auckland & Affinity Services signed
the document Collaborative Working Pilot Project Between Supporting Families
& Affinity Services.
Affinity Services and Supporting Families (SF) both
provide mental health support services in the same geographical area. Affinity
has a large number of clients and a strong commitment to support families. SF
has specialist skills in working with families and whanau. This pilot
represents a logical alliance of skills and resources to meet the needs of
people affected by mental illness.
Our goal is to help clients and their families and whanau
to achieve greater independence from mental health services by reconnecting
with their communities, families and personal networks to sustain recovery.
Together we can increase their skills, knowledge and confidence to help realise
this.

Operating in this way since 1984, Framework's vision,
